Also on 3rd September 1959:

One of my favourite places (ie Mick Rock's) to view trains during my school days, pocket money and school holidays permitting was Tamworth.

With an emphasis on money I along with several others had a cunning plan when it came purchasing rail tickets for such a trip. We would buy a return from Worcester Shrub Hill to Birmingham New Street and then buy another ticket from New Street to Tamworth this proved to be cheaper than buying a through ticket.

What was rather amazing was that by travelling on the 07.54 Worcester Shrub Hill - York there was enough time if you were a whippet to get your Tamworth ticket at New Street and still board the same train, for in those days there was a small booking office at the top of the platform stairs, but only 6 minutes to get ticket and jump back on train. Very convenient ! Anyway on to the trip itself.

73158 hauled the 07.54 Worcester(SH) - York

Once at Tamworth it was difficult to stay on the station as trainspotters were viewed by the station staff as a menace and we would thus congregate in a field exposed to the elements but where it was possible to Observe movements on both the high and low level lines.
